Policy Briefing: RG97 Regime Update (Melbourne)

ASIC recently released its long-awaited Consultation Paper in relation to proposed amendments to the RG97 regime. This follows on from the Darren McShane report of August 2018 to ASIC.  

For the Melbourne event, Jon Ireland of Norton Rose Fulbright and Harry New of Hall & Wilcox will discuss RG97, the draft documents, their implications for the industry and the way forward.

     Jon Ireland
     Partner, Norton Rose Fullbright

     Jon is a leading corporate and financial services lawyer, specialising in complex
     transactions, funds management and investment distribution.  

     Jon provides advice to leading Australian and international financial services clients on
     the full range of corporate, commercial and regulatory issues facing these businesses.
     He has considerable experience advising them on significant strategic initiatives
     including cross-border transactions, entering the Australian market, acquisitions,
     disposals and restructuring of their businesses.

     Jon also regularly advises on day-to-day funds management issues including fund
     structuring, disclosure, investment management and outsourcing arrangements. He
     has particular expertise in the area of investment distribution and has advised on key
     projects for financial institutions in the areas of platforms and advice.

     Recently, Jon advised a global fund manager on the establishment of $2bn and $5bn
     fund-of-one registered schemes as part of the expansion of its Australian business.

      negotiation of material outsourcing arrangements for a global investment bank and a
     scheme modernisation project for a leading Australian fund manager. Jon's experience
     also includes advising on the establishment of the Australian operations of a global
     diversified financial services business, including regulatory and corporate issues
     related to its expansion.

     Jon's clients value his advice on recent law reforms, including around fees and costs
     disclosure (RG 97) and the incoming product design and distribution obligations. Jon is
     a regular participant on Financial Services Council working groups and has experience

     Harry New
     Partner, Hall & Wilcox Lawyers

     Harry is the lead partner of the firm's Financial Services practice and his practice
     focuses extensively on financial services, corporate advisory and general corporate
     and commercial work.

     Over almost 20 years’ of practice, Harry has represented local and international listed
     public companies and investment funds, large private companies and investment
     funds and government organisations. Clients include all types of financial services
     businesses, including responsible entities, professional trustees, investment
     managers, financial advisers investment advisers, insurance brokers, corporate
     advisers and accountants.
