MANDATORY DATA BREACH NOTIFICATION AND PRIVACY WORKSHOP
By Leigh Sujanto
A number of recent high-profile events involving the financial services sector and data security have led to an increased concern around the protection of personal infomation.
This comes on top of the fundamental reform to Australia’s privacy and data protection landscape – the new mandatory data breach notification regime, which came into effect on 22 February 2018.
In light of this highly-sensitive data landscape, the FSC held a Mandatory Data Breach Reporting and Privacy Workshop on Wednesday, 27 June with a panel of experts discussing the impact of the new reporting requirements and the modifications that businesses need to implement to ensure compliance with the new requirements.
It was a full house at the workshop.
On the panel was Michele Bahari, Privacy and Data Protection Manager at Deloitte; Matt McMillan, Partner at McCullough Robertson; Amie Grierson, Acting Assistant-Commissioner at the OAIC; and Malcolm Crompton who is the Founder and Lead Privacy Advisor at IIS Partners.
Grierson began the session by setting the scene, talking through some of the key trends that the OAIC have identified in the first quarter since the new reporting regime was introduced in February. The presentation can be found here.
